On January 25th, 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced $4.9 billion for 37 projects through the National Infrastructure Project Assistance (Mega) and the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant programs.
The 2024 Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting’s plenary session featured a fireside chat on the importance of mental wellness in the construction industry. The discussions between Travis McCarthy at Sundt Construction, Peter Tateishi at ż of California, and Sharareh (Sherri) Kermanshachi at Penn State Harrisburg highlighted the efforts that the construction industry has been undertaking at a contractor, research, and industry level to promote healthy mental well-being in the industry’s workforce.
On September 20, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) released a notice for proposed rulemaking addressing a variety of work zone safety issues near highways. Many of the proposed changes aim to modernize standards that had last been updated in the early 2000s, but substantial changes were proposed for topics such as measuring safety standards, reviews of state DOT’s safety programs, and the use cases for positive protection devices.

Working with the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance, and with cooperation from Virginia’s Department of Transportation, TRIP released a new Virginia report. The report, “Keeping Virginia Mobile: Providing a Modern, Sustainable Transportation System in the Old Dominion State,” examines Virginia’s road and bridge conditions, congestion, traffic safety, economic development, and projects and programs completed or underway to improve the transportation system. In addition to statewide data, the report includes regional breakdowns. The report also looks at the challenges Virginia faces to accommodate future transportation growth, maintain the existing system, and sustain adequate state transportation investment despite the funding impacts of highway construction cost inflation, increasing fuel efficiency standards, and the adoption of electric vehicles
